Started Echo Night Beyond

Admittedly I'm not sure why I thought up this silly three day review, there's no way I'll be able to hold myself to it. Still it's practice I guess and that has to count for something.

Anyway this game is the story of a couple who plan a marriage on the moon. Obviously things don't turn out well and the man wakes up in a facility with his only goal being to find his bride to be. The game runs off of the King's Field engine though instead of fighting lizards and whatnot the player must run away from ghosts. This is basically an adventure game where in order to solve the mysteries of the facility the player must help the recently deceased so they can cease their haunting ways.

Graphically it's a bit dated but while the elements of horror don't have the presentation of Dead Space or any other newer title it still manages to work in its own way, which is in generating the right atmosphere to fit the experience. Still I'm really not sure how I'll ever beat this game in time for a review. These kind of games are best played with the lights out.

  1. Ah, I've been meaning to pick this up for a while now (thanks to a positive mention on NeoGAF). So, you think it's worth the price of admission?

  2. Well this game cost me only $4 and I got at least one decent hour out of it so far. I've done a lot worse with more money.

There's some clever puzzles from what little progress I've made so far. The most notable at one point is the monitor system. I probably should've mentioned this earlier but ghosts are practically invisible unless you're practically right on top of one. The only safe way to see them is via cameras placed throughout most rooms.

At one point early on I had to avoid a ghost while going through various rooms to find items. This ghost is looking for someone and wanders the hallway as well as periodically checking each room. It's really neat being able to use the monitors to plan a safe route.

  3. Ah, see, I knew there was a reason I had to get this one. Those gameplay elements sound pretty cool! I'll have to keep an eye out for a cheap-ish copy. Anyway, thanks for sharing your early impressions!

  5. I'll keep that in mind. I dunno though it feels like I'm stretching myself a bit thin.
I already write reviews for Giantbomb, XBLAratings, and this site.

Maybe if they have a game there that hasn't already been reviewed to death I'll consider it.
